My first job was delivering newspapers to my neighborhood just outside Columbus. I was eight. There were a lot of papers so instead of biking I pulled a wagon. A hundred and thirty houses. I did this every Saturday morning for two years.

But one Saturday there was a soccer game I couldn’t miss. And it was looking like the papers weren’t going to get delivered.

So I got my ass out of bed at three a.m. and stuffed those papers in their plastic bags, loaded the wagon, and set out into the dark with a flashlight without my parents knowing. I delivered all one hundred and thirty and my folks were none the wiser.

Or so I had hoped. In reality, I did about twenty houses and then the wagon broke so I ran home. But boy my heart was in it. I was gonna get the job done because I said I would. I think I am the same way today.

I tripped the alarm coming back in and my parents were pissed. We got the wagon and finished that afternoon. Shortly after I resigned as paperboy but I have only ever excelled at keeping my word.
